The Charlestown Navy Yard was founded in 1800 and is one of the first of six naval shipyards in the United States. During its 174 year life-span, the yard produced some of the best known fighting vessels for the United States Navy. We will walk through what once was 130 acres of shipbuilding facilities with stops at the USS Constitution, the USS Cassin Young, notable structures such as Drydock #1, and various types of buildings constructed in the 1800s and 1900s. We’ll discuss the yard’s closure in 1974 and how 100 acres was redeveloped for civilian use while the remaining 30 acres was retained by the National Park Service.
