Chameleon offers a poignant program featuring four works of memory and elegy, love and loss. Puccini’s Crisantemi for string quartet and Gordon Jacob’s Sextet for piano and winds are musical bouquets in memory of friends, and Charlotte Bray’s Fire Burning in Snow for soprano and chamber ensemble is a reflection on obsession, desire, solitude, and lost love. Dedicated “to the memory of a great artist,” Rachmaninoff’s Piano Trio No. 2 – the élégiaque – was composed in a flurry of emotion in just five weeks, revealing celestial glimpses of his mentor in a rapturous outpouring of pathos and passion.
