Victor Romanul, https://www.victorromanulviolinist.com, member of the Boston Symphony and frequent guest artist of the SCCO, will be performing two concertos for violin and orchestra. The works, by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (most often known as Saint-Georges or Chevalier), and José Silvestre de Los Dolores White y Lafitte (known as José or Joseph White), are rarely performed. Both composers were highly accomplished in many spheres, especially Saint-Georges, who was a master swordsman, and well respected in their areas of expertise in their lifetimes. Saint-Georges 1745-1799. White 1836-1918. However, since both were of mixed parentage -- their fathers, French and Spanish; their mothers, Afro-Cuban and Senegalese -- they suffered from racism in social spheres, perhaps the unfortunate reason for their works being mostly forgotten. The White concerto, in particular, requires great technical virtuosity on the part of the soloist. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we present these remarkable pieces of music of enduring beauty. Ravel's Boléro completes the program.
