"Cello / Piano Loops" explores music that captivates the listener through hypnotic repetition, colorful harmonies, and storytelling. Leoš Janáček’s Fairy Tale weaves folk-inspired Czech melodies in a dreamlike narrative, while Philip Glass’ Etudes unfold in evolving patterns, both meditative and dramatic.
Also on the program, original works by Nick Dinnerstein:
Puppet Music, for cello and loop pedal, layers the instrument in varied textures, showcasing the cello’s rich resonance.
Sonatina for cello and piano—a premiere—employs propulsive rhythmic energy through a blend of minimalism, modernism, and jazz, to create a dynamic musical journey.
Each work invites the listener to lose themselves in a kaleidoscope of patterns—each piece its own sound world.
Nick Dinnerstein enjoys a varied career as a cellist, composer, and teacher.
He has performed baroque chamber music at the New York Historical Society, recitals at the Museum Complex in Duxbury, minimalism at the Cape Cod Center for the Arts, and his own compositions at Art Bath, Chinatown Soup, and other independent east coast venues.
Nick recently completed a string quartet commission, a piece which will be performed at historical sites across the country.
Boston-based pianist Paul Jacobs has performed across the U.S., specializing in 20th-century and contemporary works. Notable performances include Ives’s Concord Sonata, Ligeti Etudes, and Glass’s Metamorphosis.
A champion of new music, he has premiered works by composers like Allen Anderson and recorded with Juventas New Music Ensemble. He is a member of the Thoreau Piano Trio and has appeared at festivals such as Warebrook and White Lake.
He holds degrees from Longy School of Music, Michigan State University, and Hope College.
