Join Associate Artistic Director, composer and pianist Anthony R. Green for a special livestreamed concert-convo!
The program will be as follows:
Rippling Spring Waltz - Estelle D. Ricketts (first piano piece published by a Black woman)
Battle of Manassas - Blind Tom Wiggins (who was enslaved and a piano prodigy)
Mother's Sacrifice - L. Viola Kinney (prize-winning piece, her only surviving work)
Suite: In the Bottoms - R. Nathaniel Dett (5-movement character suite by a Black Canadian composer)
Troubled Water - Margaret Bonds (student of Florence Price, incredible pianist)
A waltz by Scott Joplin (either Bethena or Harmony Club Waltz)
The Warbling Mazurka by Thomas Martin (esentially a waltz),
And a composition of his own: a waltz set to the Ricketts.
For each piece or set A.R.Green will discuss the history and the composers, and make the event conversational, educational, and musical.
