This month, we're joined by Dr. Ann Neumeyer, talking about the science and controversies of autism. Dr. Neumeyer is a pediatric neurologist who has over 20 years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of children with autism and of children with neurodevelopmental disabilities and in medical and neurological issues that present with autism. As a member of Massachusetts Autism Commission and the steering committee of the HRSA funded Autism Intervention Networks in Physical Health, and as PI on the Autism Speaks/ Autism Treatment Network, she works to develop better clinical care for children both in Massachusetts and in North America. Her clinical observations have fueled a strong interest in investigations of metabolic and bone development issues in children with autism. Her clinical experience and interest in the care of children with autism spectrum disorders has also fueled an interest in advocacy for children with autism and to help to get an autism insurance bill passed in the Massachusetts State House. As Medical Director of the Lurie Center, the multidisciplinary clinical program of the Lurie Center for Autism, she also works to improve hospital systems to ensure quality of care for children with autism as inpatients and outpatients. Dr. Neumeyer attended Dartmouth Medical School and trained in pediatrics at Montreal Children’s Hospital and Boston Medical Center before starting her Neurology/Pediatric Neurology training at Massachusetts General Hospital where she continues to practice.
