Though Clara Schumann was one of the most renowned pianists of her era, her Piano Trio in G minor is hardly piano-centric — from the sighing motives of the opening Allegro moderato to the earnest lyricism of the Andante, the work engages the three instruments equally in expressing its quintessentially Romantic themes.
In his Sonata for Viola and Piano, celebrated Bostonian composer (and violist) John Harbison provides an intimate portrait of his preferred instrument. The work unfolds in six brief movements that bring forth the soulful sonorities at the heart of the viola sound.
Johannes Brahms’s Piano Quartet in A major is both a clear tribute to Schubert and distinctly Brahmsian in its imaginative counterpoint, robust scale and incorporation of Hungarian Gypsy music. The longest of Brahms’s chamber works, the quartet was received with high approbation at its Vienna debut in 1862.
