▼ Blockhead ▼
https://blockheadnyc.bandcamp.com/
Tony Simon AKA Blockhead was born and raised in Downtown Manhattan, in New York City. The son of an artist, he found a fondness for music at a young age. In particular, he fell in love with hip-hop and the culture that shaped the genre. Penning rhymes in his early teens he joined a group called The Overground, but as deep as his love for the art form went, he always had an interest in the musical and technical side of things. He would soon abandon his dreams of becoming a rapper to become the man behind the beats.
Eventually, he met legendary producer and long-time friend Aesop Rock. The duo regularly produced music together, releasing it over the internet until 2000 when Aesop's album "Float" was released on Mush Records and quickly propelled the two into notoriety. Soon after, Blockhead released a breakbeat album on the same label called "Blockhead's Broke Beats".
After years of making beats for rappers, Blockhead put out his first solo instrumental record on Ninja Tune titled "Music by Cavelight". This was the first of four critically acclaimed albums he has since released on the UK based label. As well as releasing his solo projects, Blockhead has worked with an impressive roster of artists including Murs, Slug, Mike Ladd, Cage, Open Mike Eagle, Mac Lethal, SA Smash, and Isaiah Toothtaker, among others. He has also been busy touring over the last eight years with the likes of Amon Tobin, Bonobo, Kid Koala, Emancipator, and Aesop Rock himself. Currently, he's finishing up a bevvy of projects, including a new solo album titled "Interludes After Midnight", his fifth release on Ninja Tune.
