BOSTON’S BLACK COMMUNITIES TO DISCUSS THE COVID-19 OUTBREAK IN CITY NEIGHBORHOODS, LOOK TO STRATEGIES FOR REPAIR & CIVIC RENEWAL
The New Democracy Coalition and city activists will host a virtual town hall meeting this week to discuss the deadly and disproportionate impact of COVOD-19 in Boston’s black community. The discussion will be led by University of Virginia Professor Alice Coombs, MD, a nationally recognized expert on black/white healthcare disparities in the United States. It will be hosted by Carol Copeland Thomas of C. Thomas and Associates.
The online event will be held live, Thursday, April 16, 7 PM / EST. The discussion, which will include well-known Boston activists, clergy and academics, will also be streamed live on The New Democracy Coalition Facebook Page. https://www.facebook.com/newdemocracycoalition/
“This will be a conversation about what needs to happen moving forward. It is entirely reasonable for a community under a healthcare crisis such as the one Boston’s black community is currently experiencing to seek answers and policy solutions from the people who purport to lead them,” said Kevin Peterson, one of the events coordinators.
“What is being done as an immediate response to this deadly virus is not enough if we continue to make claims to be a multi-racial democracy. This forum is organized to ensure that a tragedy like this does not harm black people in Boston disproportionately as we become a greater city. If there must be pain, we must all share the pain across the color, class and economic lines.”
