Born in New York City in 1914, Bernard Brussel-Smith became one of the few artists to excel at the exacting medium of wood engraving. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, and the New School for Social Research, New York. He was a teacher at the Brooklyn Museum, Cooper Union, City College and the National Academy.
