50 Years of Hip-Hop with Roxanne Shante
Berklee Africana Studies celebrates the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with an all-star lineup of performers highlighting the power of Black creative expression featuring local and national artists who have made an impact within the past half century.
Headlined by the legendary female MC Roxanne Shante, who burst onto the scene in the early 1980s with the single, "Roxannes Revenge," representing an era in the mid 1980s where answer songs and diss records would become the trend. This brilliant MC, who paved the way for female rappers Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, and more, will perform her most famous hit songs on the stage of the Berklee Performance Center.
Along with its pioneering female MC, the concert will also feature Berklee students produced by Mila Thigpen, chair, Boston Conservatory at Berklee Dance Division, and Queen D. Scott, professor, Berklee College of Music, as well as local artists and MCs Amanda Shea and Oompa. We will induct our inaugural cohort of honorees into the Berklee Hip-Hop Hall of Fame.
