The Berklee Beyoncé Ensemble is a large production that captures the essence of HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) culture and aesthetics. Under the direction of Tia Fuller, professor and artistic director, this group pays homage to Beyonce's 2018 Homecoming performance. In commemorating black colleges' and universities' rich lineage of southern musical traditions, you will hear intersections of New Orleans's second line marches with Houston's chopped and screwed hip-hop. This group explores the cross-pollination of different musical genres, dance, drum lines, horns, steppers, majorettes, and more.
More than ten Berklee students make up the production team. It all started when creative administrator Anja Veterova approached Professor Fuller and shared that it was her dream to do a Beyonce "Homecoming" show. Malachi Lewis is the group's musical director; Marlon Solomon and Kirlisa Broxton are producers; and Keira Smith and Diamond Gray are the assistant creative directors. Sarai Brown-Alexander is the executive producer and also will be spearheading a BBE docu-series sharing the process of creating this show and behind-the-scenes footage. Also, recent graduates Demi Brown and Brandon Harris serve as the faculty choreographer and BGV vocal arranger.
Furthermore, this performance celebrates a new partnership and exchange program between Berklee and Fuller's alma mater, Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, which will launch fall 2022. This exchange will open up the avenue for Berklee students to experience the rich culture of HBCU and vice vera.
Anchored in the five basic principles of wisdom, humility, forgiveness, nurturing, and spirituality, BBE is moving forward with excellence of character, vision, performance, and intent. Get ready to be inspired, empowered, and entertained.
