Hold onto your hats! This concert spans four centuries! Les Délices brings together artists with national reputations who share a passion for the exquisite music of the French Baroque. They are directed by Debra Nagy, a baroque oboist of “consummate taste and expressivity,” and their polished, dynamic performances draw rapturous reviews. With a musical approach that is “distinctly sensual … pliant, warm, and sweet” (New York Times), Ms. Nagy expands her repertoire with timeless songs whose emotionally-charged melodies stir the passions and inspire improvisation with echoes of jazz. With her lush continuo band of viola da gamba, theorbo, and harpsichord, she breathes new life into torch songs, from the 17th to 20th centuries, with original arrangements and improvisations. Baroque music by Rameau, Lully, Marais, Lambert, Bacilly, De Bossuet, & Chabanceau, is paired with modern classics: Edith Piaf, Aretha Franklin, Stephen Sondheim, Nina Simone, Paul McCartney & others.
Cleveland’s Plain Dealer commented, “Mixing old and new numbers freely, the ensemble liberated the music of both eras, creating a kind of conversation across the centuries.”
Tickets at the door, cash or check: $30 general admission / $25 seniors / students free.
