Each session will be self-contained, devoted to a dance or dances reconstructed from baroque dance notation: ballroom dances from the early 18th century that would have been “performed” at elaborate court balls and at private gatherings. No prior Baroque dance experience is required — steps needed for the dances will be taught as part of the workshop.
The repertory:
Jan. 21
Menuets and contredanses, choreography from various sources
Contredanses became popular at court because they are relatively easy to learn and because they allow more than a single copule to dance at the same time. Menuets use a few basic steps and figures in a semi-improvised couple dance. In this first workshop of 2017, we'll do an assortment of contredanses and some basic menuet steps and figures.
Feb. 18
Les Folies d'Espagne, choreography from various sources
There are several choreographed variations for a solo dancer that are set to the well-known Follia tune. We will look at some of these, from the straightforward variations for a woman by Feuillet to some of the more complex variations for a man, and play with the character of the dance in relation to the Follia music.
Mar. 18
Gigue (la Gigue de Roland), choreography by Raoul-Anger Feuillet
Set to music from the opera Roland, by Lully, this lively theatrical couple dance uses a fairly simple step-vocabulary in an economical choreography that follows the structure of its music.
Apr. 8
La Lorraine (Rigaudon de Provence), choreography by Claude Balon
This delightful ballroom dance has a good-humored, rustic feel. Like other dances we've looked at, it involves step-sequences that repeat in different orientations.
