The 34th annual Balkan Music Night will be held on March 16, 2019, at the 51 Walden (St.) Performing Arts Center in Concord MA. Balkan Music Night is the premier local event devoted to showcasing the distinctive and vibrant instrumental and vocal music of southeastern Europe. Produced in partnership with the Folk Arts Center of New England, Balkan Music Night brings together folk music and dance enthusiasts from across the Northeast for a fun-filled night of traditional music and dancing. The evening’s festivities take place in two separate spaces: the Main Hall, for participatory dancing to energetic, live Balkan dance band music, and the Kefana, for acoustic music performances in an intimate venue with concert seating.
Balkan Music Night performers are master musicians who emigrated from the Balkan countries, as well as American-born musicians who have embraced these traditions, playing traditional music from Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and beyond. Among the night’s performers are Ivan Milev, the Bulgarian accordionist extraordinaire, with violinist Entcho Todorov, who will astound us with their high-energy Balkan dance tunes; local violin virtuoso Beth Bahia Cohen, performing Hungarian Transylvanian music (with Mimi Rabson and Michael Harrist) and lively Greek dance music (with Sandy Theodorou and friends); Sarma Brass Band, and the Harris Brothers Balkan Band, both bringing dynamic Balkan-style brass music right to the dance floor; Elitsa Stoyneva, a seven-time gold medalist folk singer from Bulgaria; the Music Progressive Quartet from Skopje, conservatory-trained musicians playing original songs that fuse modern jazz with traditional Balkan melodies; and much more!
The night begins with the dance party in the Main Hall at 7:00PM, with simple, no-partner dances for which brief instruction will be provided. The fun continues until 1:00AM with refreshments, sing-alongs, and a dance performance from Ludo Mlado, the Bulgarian folklore dance ensemble based in Boston. Upstairs in the Kefana, enjoy a more mellow listening experience, with music from 8:00PM until midnight. Throughout the night, visit the main lobby to enjoy complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and light snacks, and purchase band CDs (and more!) at the FAC music shop, “The Little Shop of Horas”.
Join us on March 16th for Balkan Music Night! Twelve bands, six hours of dancing, thirteen hours of music – all in one night! Tickets bought in advance are $35 for the entire evening ($40 at the door) with discounts for kids, young adults, seniors, and Folk Arts Center members. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.balkanmusicnight.com
