The 32nd annual Balkan Music Night will be held on March 18, 2017, at the 51 Walden (St.) Performing Arts Center in Concord MA. Balkan Music Night is the premier Boston-area event presenting the distinctive, compelling, and vibrant repertoire of music and dance from southeastern Europe. Bringing together folk music and dance enthusiasts from across the Northeast and beyond, the evening features traditional instrumental and vocal music for dancing and listening from Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and Turkey. Sponsored by the Folk Arts Center of New England, this event features master musicians from the Balkan countries as well as American-born musicians who have taken these musical traditions to their hearts. Also participating are young, up-and-coming musicians and dancers who represent "the next generation."
Among the bands performing at Balkan Music Night are NYC’s Zlatne Uste (“Golden Lips”), the foremost Balkan-style brass band in the U.S.; Novi Maleševski Zurli, from Macedonia by way of Detroit, playing high-energy Macedonian, Romani and Albanian dance tunes; Greek clarinet master Lefteris Bournias joining local violin virtuoso Beth Bahia Cohen and friends, performing traditional Greek music as well as the Kavala brass band playing the stirring dance music of northern Greece; Boston-based Mierliţa with "swingy Romanian music in the Gypsy style"; Mehmet Ali Sanlikol and musicians from DÜNYA (“World”) presenting the fasil repertoire of Turkish art and folk music; Pajdashi, with sparkling upbeat Croatian tamburitza music; and more!
The dance party in the main hall gets underway at 7 pm with simple, no-partner dances for which easy instruction will be provided. The fun continues until 1:00AM with refreshments, sing-alongs, and a dance performance from local Bulgarian dance troupe Ludo Mlado. For a more mellow listening experience, the upstairs Kefana gets underway shortly before 8 pm and offers acoustic music performed in an intimate venue with concert seating.
Tickets in advance are $35 for the entire evening ($40 at the door) with discounts for kids, young adults, seniors, and Folk Arts Center members; advance registration/ticket purchase is strongly recommended. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.balkanmusicnight.com
