This class is a fun, hands-on workshop in upcycling old Bakelite into finished, wearable jewelry. Students will cut, file, sand, and polish found Bakelite and gain a kinesthetic understanding of the material, as well as learn how to make a simple ring from found materials.
Our guest teacher, William Vanaria, will cover the historical context of this material in the form of a short lecture, as Bakelite is a very important plastic. (One of the very first successful ones too! The impact that it had on the plastic industry and other modern materials cannot be overstated.) Will will also give some advice about how to identify and buy real Bakelite, as the current market is chock full of people selling knockoff plastics that are more similar to ABS.
No experience required. Bring a friend!
