Join the Back Bay Chorale on Saturday March 7th for The Golden Age of Brass, a concert of 17th century works from Schütz and Schein (Germany); and Gabrielli and Monteverdi (Italy). Working in Venice, Leipzig, and Munich, these composers were influenced by their predecessors, teachers, and one another as they traveled and composed across the cultural centers of Europe. They expanded polyphony in new directions, combining old and new techniques to great effect.
The Chorale is joined by an exciting early instrument sextet, Dark Horse Consort, who specialize in the “rapturous kaleidoscope” of the early 17th century ensemble, as well as six vocal soloists. The program features varying textures as the vocal and instrumental ensembles will present selections of their own.
Repertoire includes movements from Monteverdi’s much-loved Vespers of 1610, Gabrielli’s Jubilate Deo, and the Musikalische Exequien of Heinrich Schütz (as rewarding to hear in concert as it is difficult to pronounce). Come hear brilliant music from another time that will surprise, excite and engage listeners in unexpected ways! Tickets and information: www.bbcboston.org
