Artist Joiri Minaya and Camilo Alvarez join in conversation to discuss Minaya's practice and body of work. This artist talk is presented in conjunction with Joiri Minaya's solo exhibition, The Great Camouflage, at Praise Shadows Art Gallery.

1 – 1:30 pm: Meet Joiri Minaya @ Praise Shadows Art Gallery (313A Harvard St, Brookline, MA 02446). No tickets required.
2 – 3 pm: Artist talk between Joiri Minaya and Camilo Alvarez at the Coolidge Corner Theater (290 Harvard St, Brookline, MA 02446). This is a ticketed event and capacity is extremely limited. Registration is required.
Joiri Minaya (1990) is a New York-based Dominican-United Statesian multidisciplinary visual artist whose work destabilizes historic and contemporary representations of an imagined tropical identity. She studied art at the ENAV (DR), the Chavón School of Design, and Parsons. Minaya has exhibited across the Caribbean, the U.S. and internationally. She recently received a NYSCA / NYFA Artist Fellowship, a Jerome Hill Fellowship, and a NY Artadia award. She has participated in residencies at Skowhegan, Smack Mellon, LES Printshop, Socrates Sculpture Park, Art Omi, ISCP, Vermont Studio Center, New Wave, Silver Art Projects and Fountainhead, among others. Minaya’s work is in the collections of the Santo Domingo Museo de Arte Moderno, the Centro León Jiménes, the Kemper Museum, El Museo del Barrio, and several private collections. Camilo Alvarez was born in New York, N.Y., and resides in Boston. He received a B.A. in Art History from Skidmore College and a Masters of Liberal Arts in Museum Studies from Harvard University. He has worked at Exit Art (N.Y., N.Y.), Socrates Sculpture Park (Queens, N.Y.), MIT’s List Visual Art Center (Cambridge, MA) and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (N.Y., N.Y. and Skowhegan, ME).
He is the Co-Chair of the Advisory Board at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, and is on the National Advisory Council of Skidmore College’s Tang Teaching Museum. He is the Owner, Director and Preparator at Samsøñ, formerly Samson Projects, founded in 2004.
