Join artists Helina Metaferia and Sheida Soleimani for a virtual conversation moderated by Gannit Ankori, Henry and Lois Foster and Chief Curator. Together with Ankori, Metaferia and Soleimani will discuss the connections between each other’s distinct creative practices, which melds photography, collage, and various other mediums to mine complex sociopolitical histories while developing deep collaborative relationships with their activist subjects.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Helina Metaferia is an interdisciplinary artist working across collage, assemblage, video, performance, and social engagement. She received her MFA from Tufts University’s School of the Museum of Fine Arts and attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Metaferia’s solo exhibitions include Museum of the African Diaspora, San Francisco, CA (2024 and 2017); Center for Book Arts, New York, NY (2024); RISD Art Museum, Providence, RI (2022-2023); and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA (2021-2022). Her work is in several museum collections, including Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; the Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University, Waltham, MA; and KADIST, Paris, France. Metaferia is an Assistant Professor at Brown University. She lives and works in New York City.
Sheida Soleimani is an Iranian-American artist, educator, and activist. Soleimani makes work that melds sculpture, collage, and photography, highlighting her critical perspective on Iran's historical and contemporary socio-political occurrences. She received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BFA from the University of Cincinnati. Her recent solo exhibitions include Ghostwriter at Edel Assanti (London, UK), Negotiators at Kunsthaus Photoforum Pasquart (Biel, Switzerland), Ghostwriter at Providence College Galleries (Providence, RI), Levers of Power at Silver Eye Centre for Photography (Pittsburgh, PA), Hotbed at Denny Dimin Gallery (New York, NY), Medium of Exchange at Southern Utah Museum of Art (Cedar City, UT) and CUE Art Foundation (New York, NY). Soleimani is a professor of studio art at Brandeis University and lives and works in Providence, RI.
This program is held in conjunction with the exhibition Face to Face: Portraits of Self and Others, September 18–December 29, 2024, and is co-sponsored by the Creativity, the Arts, and Social Transformation Program at Brandeis University.
