Join Artist in Residence, Jane D. Marsching, and Fruitlands Museum Curator, Shana Dumont Garr, as they discuss what Utopia means today, in light of Covid-19, climate change, and other vital, current issues.
Marsching will describe her work on a mobile letterpress and open-air ink-making lab to be sited at the Fruitlands Farmhouse, banners coming soon to the museum’s 210-acre woodlands setting, and a zine presenting her research on the Museum’s archives, along with quotes by other philosophical thinkers on environmental justice and collective action. Garr will describe how Marsching’s work fits in the tradition of Transcendentalist-inspired artwork and the legacy of nature’s influence on avant-garde art from the 1800s through the 21st century. They will muse together about the power of the past to inform radical change in the present and to support fresh contemplation of the future.
Learn more about Marsching's project "Speaking of the Future: Utopia Press" and upcoming exhibition "Recruiting for Utopia: Print and the Imagination."
