The historic Copley Square Hotel, a boutique property located in the heart of Boston’s vibrant Back Bay neighborhood, is thrilled to announce its first-ever summer event series at its Art Square Gallery pop-up. The series will kick off with Ocean Life, a solo show by Boston-based artist Nedret Andre.
The hotel recently unveiled a brand new meeting space, Art Square, which was specially designed to inspire and support the area’s innovative, on-the-go business community. It pays homage to the area’s history while providing an inspiring place for its guests to channel their creativity and think differently.
An extension of the new meeting space is Art Square Gallery, which will serve as a place where local artists can showcase their work. Art Square Gallery is an annex of the meeting space, as well as the main lobby, and will be hosting exhibits by professional artists. Gallery visits are open to hotel guests as well as the general public.
Kicking off Art Square Gallery’s first exhibit is Andre’s seagrass-inspired abstract art that will be showcased through September as part of her solo show, Ocean Life. Seagrass, which is a foundation plant that feeds, shelters and protects thousands of sea creatures, brings inspiration to Andre’s colorful landscapes. The color, energy, and interconnectedness of species are present in her Ocean Life paintings. Despite the fact that two football fields of seagrass meadows are lost every hour, Andre attempts to portray the beauty found in seagrass habitats through her work, as they hold a treasure trove of benefits for all walks of life.
Featured in the show will be Andre’s Oyster Beds, where she portrays clusters of abstracted overlapping shapes that mimic oyster reefs, as oysters filter and clear out nitrates from the water. A second piece, Low Tide Scallops, was inspired by vegetation and line work that mimics patterns on a scallop. Baby scallops grow on the top of blades of eelgrass where they are protected from bottom feeders. These are just two of Andre’s pieces of work that attempt to raise awareness of how creatures utilize seagrass to survive.
Andre will also co-host two events with the hotel as part of the summer event series at Art Square Gallery. The opening event, taking place on Thursday, June 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., will get underway with a presentation by Tay Evans, a Marine Fisheries Biologist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and Annisquam River Marine Fisheries Station, who will discuss the current threat to seagrass and the conservation efforts around it. Andre will go on to discuss how her work portrays these habitats and how her paintings highlight their importance.
Following their presentations, guests will have the chance to enjoy a light reception and mingling. An event on Thursday, July 18 will follow and feature a printmaking and painting workshop with Andre, as well as a presentation by Julie Simpson, coastal aquatic ecologist with the MIT Sea Grant College Program in the Marine Advisory Services group, who will highlight the importance of the seagrass ecosystem. To celebrate its new summer event series, Copley Square Hotel is offering a special discounted rate to hotel guests who attend one of the events. Guests are required to RSVP to one or both events on Eventbrite.
