This lecture, which is open to the public, will include the medieval and proto-Renaissance movements, and ending with the high renaissance in both Northern and Italian schools of painting. We will be concentrating specifically on the methods and materials of three major painters from this time period : Van Eyck, Raphael, and Titan. There will be two parts to the lecture : the historical context of dates and movements, and a technical analysis of methods and techniques. Using a technical analysis we will examine how each painter constructed their paintings from the ground up, starting with their choice of surface and how it was prepared, to their last layers of glazing and finishing. By understanding how these painters painted, we can better understand the concerns and emphasis of each painter, and their place in the larger frame of art history.
