Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571 - 1610) is often popularized as “the bad boy” of art. Yet in his short career, his techniques revolutionized oil painting in early 17th century Europe . In many ways Caravaggio serves as the “last act” of the Renaissance and the “grand opening” of the Baroque era. His methods of working on a very dark canvas, and working from life were essential in his dynamic use of shadow and light or “chiaroscuro”. Which became the new norm in western figurative vocabulary. In this discussion we will be diving into the process Caravaggio used - why it was so revolutionary ? - and how his contributions to art, would go on to shape the the aesthetic of the Baroque era in Western painting….and of course we’ll be talking about the “bad boy” part too.
