The Guild of Boston Artists is proud to present An Artist for All Seasons, the first solo showcase of work by Michael Graves since his election to membership in 2016. The exhibit will hang in the Guild's Newbury Street gallery from October 7 - 28th.
As a plein air artist, Graves paints on location, braving the elements, to capture the many moods and temperaments of the natural world. From serene, snow-covered rural landscapes to idyllic, bountiful, meadows there is a certain kind of immediate magic found in his canvases as he masterfully captures the full breadth of the seasonal transformations found in nature. Graves's characteristically thick broad strokes, vivid use of color, and bold impressionistic handling of light transform the landscape into a vibrant jewel box of expressive energy.
Gallery director Alexander Ciesielski says of the work on display in the upcoming exhibition, "It's always a wonder to explore Michael's painted surfaces; you can easily get lost for hours exploring the thick impasto and luminous colors laid side by side and one atop the other. All coalesces like magic as you step back to take in the full impression of a landscape seen through the eyes of this singular artist."
Born in 1952, the son of a local tree warden, Graves grew up with a love of painting and a deep appreciation for the outdoors. In the late 1970s, Graves met the renowned Cape Ann artist Bernard Corey (1914-2000). Corey became a lifelong friend and mentor and the two painted together nearly every day for over two decades. He is a friend and frequent painting companion of some of the most well-known plein air artists of New England.
A nationally-recognized landscape artist based in central Massachusetts, Graves has received over 100 awards and medals over the course of his 35-year career and has been featured in a variety of books and publications. In addition to exhibits held across the United States, his artwork has also been displayed at American embassies abroad as part of the U.S. State Department's Art in Embassies Program and his paintings are included in the permanent collection of the Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, OH. Michael Graves is a member of the Rockport Art Association, the Hudson Valley Art Association, the Old Lyme Art Association and the Guild of Boston Artists.
