"Andromeda," Daniel Chester French’s provocative masterpiece in marble, makes for an elusive subject. Sculpted only two years before the artist’s death in 1931, the work has never been exhibited outside of French’s studio at Chesterwood, his summer retreat in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Donna Hassler, co-curator of "Daniel Chester French: The Female Form Revealed," divulges in this lecture the compelling story of Andromeda and her creation by one of America’s foremost public sculptors.
This lecture is offered in conjunction with the Athenæum’s current exhibition: "Daniel Chester French: The Female Form Revealed."
Donna Hassler is Executive Director of Chesterwood and administrator at the Historic Artists’ Homes and Studios Program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. A graduate of the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University and the Graduate Center at the City University of New York, she has lectured and written extensively on American art, and especially on sculpture. Hassler is co-author of the first two volumes of "American Sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art: A Catalogue of Works by Artists Born before 1865" and "A Catalogue of Artists Born between 1865 and 1885." In 2016, she joined the design team for the refurbishment of the Lincoln Memorial on behalf of the National Parks Service. Hassler is currently working on a monograph about Andromeda.
Registration begins January 26 at 9 am.

The Athenæum's five galleried floors overlook the peaceful Granary Burying Ground, and, as Gamaliel Bradford wrote in 1931, "it is safe to say that [no library] anywhere has more an atmosphere of its own, that none is more conducive to intellectual aspiration and spiritual peace." The building was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
