On Saturday, March 18, Andover’s own the Michelle Canning Band will hosts its 6th annual “A Night on the Edge!” benefit concert to support the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA). The event will take place at 7:00 p.m. at Chelmsford Elks Hall, located at 300 Littleton Road in Chelmsford, Mass. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $7 for children 12 and under. The band has raised more than $17,000 for AFA over the past five years.
The cause hits home for Ms. Canning as her grandfather, Ken Canning, Sr., had Alzheimer’s disease and passed away at the age of 82 from the illness. The song she co-wrote in his honor, “It’ll Take Him Away,” has become a hallmark of each year’s event. People attending the benefit are invited to share photos of their loved ones who are living with, or have passed from, Alzheimer’s. Those photos are then displayed on a screen behind the stage during the performance of the song.
The proceeds raised by the event help fund AFA’s programs and services nationwide, which include a national toll-free helpline, a free caregiver magazine, educational conferences, a national Memory Screening program, dementia care training for professionals, and more.
There are approximately 120,000 people in Massachusetts living with Alzheimer’s disease with that number expected to more than triple by 2050.
