Not content to rest on her frankly astonishing laurels, clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen is bringing yet another brand-new creation on tour. Among countless other awards, this prolific composer, bandleader, and performer has been named the #1 Best Clarinetist by the Jazz Journalists Association every year since 2007. Though she’s unquestionably one of the best instrumentalists in the business, by far the most compelling reason to see Cohen in concert is to experience the unique musical worlds she so thoughtfully conjures.
This latest group brings together virtuosos and stylistic chameleons from Israel, Brazil, and the United States in an exploration and melding of multiple global influences. It’s an intriguing variation on Cohen’s widely celebrated Tentet group, whose previous Celebrity Series appearance was described by the Arts Fuse as “[having] so much tone color and so much genre variety that it might be typed (unfairly) as a world music band. If you had to type it at all, it would be much fairer and more accurate to call it a ‘universal band.’” You’ll witness musical fireworks, to be sure, but it’s that universality that ultimately makes Cohen such an impactful artist.
