Burbage Theatre Co. continues its 13th Season with An Iliad, a modern-day retelling of Homer’s epic tale, written by Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare, based on the translation by Robert Fagles. This production stars two-time Grammy Award winner Bill Harley as “The Poet” and is accompanied by Cathy Clasper-Torch, directed with an outside eye by Artistic Director Jeff Church.
An Iliad tells one of our oldest stories, delivered by one who was there, but in a modern vernacular. The Poet recounts the visceral tale of the Trojan War, and in the hands of master storyteller Bill Harley, this ancient epic takes on new immediacy. Homer’s timeless tale of war, humanity, and the gods has never felt more accessible or relevant. Harley brings the audience through the emotional and physical toll of war, speaking not just as a narrator but as one who has seen it all and remembers every detail.
Bill Harley is a world-renowned storyteller with over 40 recordings and 15 books to his name, known especially for his work with children and families. His unique ability to navigate stories with both wisdom and humor shines through in An Iliad. Accompanied by Cathy Clasper-Torch, a multi-instrumentalist known for her collaborative work across New England, the performance creates a powerful soundscape that draws audiences into the world of the play.
An Iliad runs for a limited engagement of 13 performances from November 7 to November 24 at Burbage Theatre Co.’s Wendy Overly Studio Theatre. Don’t miss this powerful production, merging an ancient story with a modern approach to storytelling.
