With Emily Marvosh, contralto & Tanya Blaich, piano
Emily Marvosh and Tanya Blaich perform songs inspired by the relationship between Kathleen Ferrier and Bruno Walter. In 1946, the British contralto Kathleen Ferrier and the eminent German conductor Bruno Walter met at a dinner party. Their friendship and collaboration continued until her early death in 1953; their performances helped bring the music of Gustav Mahler, in particular, to wider audiences worldwide. This recital is modeled on their famous Edinburgh Festival performances with Walter at the keyboard; similar recitals were also performed on American tours in 1948 and 1949. Anecdotes about Kathleen and Bruno as well as excerpts from their letters and writings will be interspersed between songs.
