Description:
Bag fIVE 4,000 footers in the Adirondack's High Peaks region on a loop: The trail is very strenuous, but very rewarding with incredible views on each of the summits. This trail takes you to the summits of Lower and Upper Wolf Jaw, Armstrong Mountain, Pyramid, and Gothics, part of the Great Range. The Phelps Trail is fairly flat with minimal elevation for the first few miles; a great way to warm up before climbing. After the campsites at John's Brook, the trail becomes very steep on the Southside and Wolfjaw Trails heading up to Lower and Upper Wolfjaw Mountains. After heading to the Upper Wolfjaw, we'll continue on to Armstrong and the Gothics via the ADK-Range trail. Depending on how we're feeling, we can also add Pyrmaid Peak which is a very short excursion to the summit and also offers incredible views. After that, we'll head to Saddleback Mountain via the State-Range Trail. We'll backtrack and head back via the Orebed-Brook Trrail back to the Phelps Trail to the trailhead. This is a very strenuous hike with a total distance of 15.2 miles with 5,000 ft. of elevation gain. Expect this hike to take the entire day, possibly into the night. We'll be camping at nearby Round Pond Campsite for two nights.
Total distance of hike: 15.2 miles
