Bassanio needs a loan to travel to the island of Belmont and pursue Portia. He receives the loan from his dear friend Antonio, who in turn borrows the money from Jewish moneylender Shylock. Shylock, who has resented Antonio for many years, locks him in a deal that could threaten his life if not fulfilled. This play explores themes of prejudice, compassion, revenge, and our relationships to our fellow man.
