Achieving Balance, an art exhibition by Zhonghe (Elena) Li
Media: Papercuts with a Pair of Scissors and Watercolor and Collages
July 3 - 30, 2023
Reception: 7/22 1;30-3:30 pm
Eagle catching Fish, or Snake wrapping around a Rabbit are traditional Chinese papercutting themes. I have found that viewers do not like to see rabbits or fish become victims. In Taoist philosophy, this traditional theme is not about dominance but about Yin-Yang balance. Only when nature is in balance, we will observe such a scene, such as after the Charles River is recovered from pollution. I have chosen this image for my July exhibition at the Concord Free Public Library to pay tribute to Ralph Waldo Emerson and to David Henry Thoreau, who in my view are the Taoist in U.S.A., and hope we achieve balance as part of the nature and also between all things we deem as duality - they are organically ONE.
