Course Description: Part of the Art and The Expanded Field pop up programming series, this course encourages students to embrace experimental painting, developing a personal style, and learning to bridge the gap between creative impulse and analytical reflection in their work. Students will be guided through exercises to help them find ways to break creative habits to further evolve style and establish practices and developmental tools they can integrate into their regular practice.
This class will bring painting back to its experimental roots empowering students to remember that maintaining an ethos of experimentation is more important than expertise. This class introduces students to abstract expressionist painters, how to produce different evoked responses through painting, exploring personal style and building vocabulary around their work. Most artists desire to be close to their work yet the relationship between an artist and their work is a difficult bridge straddling an internal force seeking expression and an interactive space that is cerebral, articulating, and analytical. How do you hold your ground in the field of interpretation? How do you better identify the distance between produced object, unarticulated creative impulse and better align those with your sense of what feels authentic to you? The course will end with an exploration of possible processes students can carry with them into the future to help structure their practice and pursuit.
Instructor Bio: Bianca Fields (b. Cleveland, Ohio, 1995) is an artist living and working in Boston, MA. Holding a BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art college (2019), Her work has been showcased in the Armory Show with Steve Turner LA, Ruttkowski;68 Paris, L21 Gallery Spain, Frieze Art Fair London with Carl Freedman Gallery, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City. The portraits and figurative painting practice of Bianca Fields manifests a tangible embodiment of repression and mental captivity. She explores this idea with competing forms of archetypes on a slick primed surface, creating a supernatural essence of anguish and isolation. Often in her work, Fields highly renders a candid mix of her vigilant portrayed primates, utilizing her feminized beasts as formidable stand ins for her imagined self. Painting wet-in-wet directly into the mouths of her subjects, she creates allegories of ritual and beauty under the beholding of the misogynoir, seeking to investigate the vicious cycle of emotional truths, abstract sense of self and violence.
