Mezzo-soprano Pamela Dellal will join Duo Maresienne (Carol Lewis, viola da gamba; Olav Chris Henriksen, renaissance lute) for a concert in the form of a 17th-century English entertainment, or “masque”. The program features music by Dowland, Robert Johnson, Tobias Hume, Nicholas Lanier, and others. Tickets are available at the door.
The Stuart Masque was the height of splendor in 17th-century England, drawing together the best music, dance, drama and staging that the London aristocracy could display. Pamela Dellal and Duo Maresienne offer a program that opens with a laudatory song by Dowland and continues with dark, grotesque character pieces by Robert Johnson and sprightly masque dances by Johnson and Hume, and even Lanier’s version of a tale from Greek tragedy: Hero’s lament for Leander. Along the way, Ms. Dellal will sing a virtuosic (and seldom-heard) bird song by John Bartlet. The concert concludes with music appropriate for the masquers’ exit, including “Love’s Farewell” by Hume, and “Come heavy sleep” by Dowland.
Mezzo-soprano Pamela Dellal has enjoyed a distinguished career as an acclaimed soloist and recitalist. She has appeared in Symphony Hall, the Kennedy Center, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Royal Albert Hall. She has been featured by the Handel and Hayden Society, Aston Magna, the Boston Early Music Festival, Tokyo Oratorio Society, Opera Company of Boston, the National Chamber Orchestra, Boston Baroque, Baltimore Choral Arts Society, and the Dallas Bach Society. Passionate about chamber music, early music, and contemporary music, she has been a regular soloist in the renowned Bach Cantata series presented by Emmanuel Music for over 30 years. Ms. Dellal serves as faculty at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and at the Longy School of Music of Bard College. Carol Lewis and Olav Chris Henriksen perform frequently in recitals individually and together, as well as with internationally acclaimed ensembles including the Boston Camerata, Hespèrion XXI, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Emmanuel Music, Capriccio Stravagante, Waverly Consort, and Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra.
