Grammy-Nominated chamber orchestra A Far Cry kicks off their season with a concert exploring how we develop music and ideas as a way to process change and to adapt and grow.
Shelley Washington | Say for String Orchestra, arr. Washington
Andrea Casarrubios | Overture and Chorale
Johann Sebastian Bach | Chaconne from Partita in D Minor for Solo Violin, BWV 1004, arr. Michi Wiancko
Franz Schubert | String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810, “Death and the Maiden,” arr. Jesse Irons
“When I was building the program I was thinking about how at the time that Bach was writing, women could never receive acclaim for composing. So with the Casarrubios and with Wiancko’s arrangement, we get to experience Bach reimagined by women. But then with Washington it’s a different sort of reimagining: reimagining painful circumstances into ones that inform identity and self acceptance.
Then, in a new arrangement for A Far Cry’s full forces, we’re reimagining a piece Schubert wrote as he was grappling with his own health and mortality into this larger communal, musical experience, and asking, ‘What if we shared our burdens more collectively?
