Grammy-Nominated chamber orchestra A Far Cry perform works by Vivaldi, Ernest Bloch, Errollyn Wallen, Jungyoon Wie (world premiere!) at NEC’s Jordan Hall.
Originating in the Baroque era, a concerto grosso is a form of orchestral music most notable for the oppositional relationship between a small group of soloists, or concertino, and the accompanying full orchestra, or ripieno. The solo instruments engage in dialogue and display virtuosic passages, while the ripieno supports and complements their performance. A Far Cry presents four genre-defining works that celebrate the concerto grosso form and highlight the dynamics that play out between players in the orchestra
Antonio Vivaldi | Concerto Grosso in G minor, RV 156
Ernest Bloch | Concerto Grosso No. 1 for String Orchestra and Piano Obbligato, B. 59
Jungyoon Wie | New Commission for A Far Cry
Errollyn Wallen | Concerto Grosso for Piano, Violin, Double Bass and Strings
“Humans are social creatures. We love to form attachments, groups, and communities. But what happens when someone stands out in the group? When their ideas, experiences, or very body don’t fit our mold? Why is one person deemed an innovator and another a menace? One a prophet and another a lunatic? One a rare beauty and another a freak? In this program we encounter four musical works that play out these struggles before our eyes with thrilling vitality.
