Join Sondheim scholar Gail Leondar-Wright for an engaging and lively 60-minute virtual program about Assassins, recently presented by the Lyric Stage Company of Boston and directed by Courtney O'Connor. We’ll delve into why composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim used popular musical forms — Civil War ballads, barbershop, spirituals, a cappella, Sousa-style marches and singer-songwriter folk of the 1970’s — as the starting point for his score. What was Sondheim saying about America by using all these familiar types of songs? We invite you to meet with Gail and other curious Sondheim lovers for this look at one of Sondheim’s most intriguing, most political works. An audience Q&A will follow the discussion.
This program will happen over Zoom webinar. Please register here.
Gail Leondar-Wright actively studies and teaches about the works of American Musical Theater Composer, Stephen Sondheim. She facilitates a national “Sondheim Study Group,” and gives periodic webinars comparing the works of Sondheim to that of other composers and lyricists. Much of her teaching is conducted online and in the Greater Boston area. Gail holds a Masters in Performance Studies from NYU and a BA in Drama from UC Berkeley.
This online program is presented by the Boston Public Library in partnership Lyric Stage Company of Boston, which produces and presents live theatre in Greater Boston with an intimate approach that promotes inclusivity and connection.
