Beltane is an ancient European holiday, occurring at the apex of Spring, which celebrates Fertility – in humans, and also in animals and plants, both wild and cultivated. Traditionally, Beltane is commemorated with dancing (especially Maypole dances) and singing; people also adorn their homes and their hair with fresh flowers and greenery. In earlier times, mead was drunk, couples were hand-fasted (a form of trial marriage), fertility charms were made and shared, and domestic livestock were blessed with fire and smoke. The holiday begins the evening of April 30th and extends through the next day, which we know as May Day. As the sun sets on the last day of April, fires of all kinds are lit, and it is considered a lucky night to conceive a child!
About the Class: Got a great folktale/legend/myth to tell, but not sure how to tell it? Help is at hand! Bring your tale, and we’ll have a good time deconstructing it, and then putting it back together – just in time for you to share it at the Beltane Adult Folktale Telling in the Armory Cafe!
About the Facilitator: Doria Hughes is a storyteller and teacher, co-founder of Massmouth, ReadBoston Corps Teller, In-house Storyteller at Porter Square Books, founder of the Adult Folktale Telling Series.
