Come explore early spring birds at Danehy Park with our friends from the Feminist Bird Club of Boston. This urban green space has several kinds of habitats so we should be able to see a nice variety of birds—resident birds as well as migrating birds.
We’ll go over some simple group birding skills at the beginning of the walk. Our hope is to leave you with a greater appreciation for birds and inspire you to speak up for protecting wild habitat, access to urban green spaces, and environmental justice.
Danehy Park is built on the site of the former city landfill. The landfill was closed to active dumping in the early 1970s. The City subsequently reclaimed what would have been a wasteland and turned it into a community resource. At Danehy Park, city residents now enjoy various activities. Today Danehy attracts an unusual variety of birds including migrating warblers in the spring and migrating sparrows in the fall as well birds of prey.
The Park is a short walk from the Alewife T station and there is parking on-site—including accessible parking. We will be on paved paths for the duration.
Limited to 20.
Carpooling, public transportation and bikes are encouraged.
Time: Sunday, April 24. This walk will be about 90-120 minutes. A hard rain will cancel this trip.
Location: Daheny Park. Meet at 7:30 am in the parking lot at the New Street entrance. New street runs behind the Fresh Pond mall between the Fresh Pond movie theater and the traffic circle.
Accessibility: This trip is wheelchair accessible. The trip is will covers about 2 miles (about 90 minutes to 2 hours) with lots of stops to look at and identify birds. Portapotties are available near the parking lot where we will meet.
PLEASE NOTE:
If it rains, this event may be canceled. We will email you or text you if you have provided your cell phone number to let you know or you can check the MHH365 Earth Day Webpage one hour before.
A new day for this event may be scheduled at a later date. Thanks!
