Whether you've been a Boston local for years or are new to the city, you may not know about some of the North End's best hidden gems. We've curated a list of hidden restaurants, bars, and sights to see in Boston's vibrant Italian neighborhood:


1) All Saints Way


Located in an alley between 4 and 8 Battery Street in Boston's North End, this street-side shrine has attracted visitors from all over the world for more than a decade.


Since Peter Baldassari was a child, he's been collecting trinkets depicting the saints. His holy collection has transformed into a display of photos, statues, and more. Peter's shrine is a personal project on his private property, but he has been known to give tours to visitors. Plus, the shrine is visible from the street and can be visited at any time of day, even if the gates are locked.


2) Modern Pastry Underground


Come to one of the North End's hidden gems! Visit the savory side below the bakery where you will find cold drinks, a variety of martinis, pub-style food, and good company. The "speakeasy" is open on Tuesday- Friday 5pm-11pm, Saturday 10am-12am, and Sunday 10am-9pm.

3) Bricco Panetteria


This basement bread bakery is located down a hidden alleyway next to Bricco on Hanover Street. From Sunday-Thursday: 8am-5pm and on Fridays and Saturdays from 7am-9pm, you can pick from a selection of fresh baked breads, including ciabatta, baguettes, and sunflower bread.

4) Umberto's


This cash-only hidden gem is one of the longest standing Italian restaurants in the North End. They're known for their square Sicilian-style pizza & arancini. They open at 11 am everyday but Sunday, and stay open through the early afternoon until they sell out. Slices cost just $2.25 and the workers arrive at 4 am each morning to make everything from scratch.
