Get ready for an exciting weekend of Dragon and Lion Dancing, and a vibrant celebration of Chinese culture. Participating teams will compete for the privilege to represent the U.S. abroad at the International Tournament in Malaysia, and will showcase the art and athleticism of traditional Asian Lion and Dragon dancing.
Lion Dancing, where two people control a large, colorful, wood and cloth lion, is traditional to Chinese culture, and also has been disseminated throughout Asia. It is a colorful, noisy, dynamic, spiritual, and highly athletic form of dance with its fundamental movements rooted in Chinese martial arts. Dragon Dance is a team effort, working with maintaining the illusion of keeping a flying dragon (on sticks held by the dancers) undulating in the air like a brightly-colored river. Both are used to honor special occasions and bring good fortune and energy to their audiences. We're even going to have a couple of teams who perform on jongs, which are basically stilt-platforms that take the lion dancers high into the air.
The events for the weekend are dynamic and varied. We kick off with a lecture on martial arts filmmaking on Friday the 25th, move through a breathtaking series of competitions displaying several different forms of Dragon and Lion Dance from skilled teams across the country, and end with a parade through the heart of Boston's Chinatown followed by a demo and banquet on Sunday the 27th.
All events are FREE to the public except for the banquet, which is well-worth the money, as there will be a jong performance there as well!
Events will be held in two locations,
