The 19-piece Compaq Big Band can’t wait to kick off another busy summer concert season, and for the second year in a row we’re doing just that at the hugely popular ‘Concerts On The Common’ summer series in Norwood, Massachusetts, Massachusetts on Sunday July 7th. The venue is the Walter J. Dempsey Memorial Bandstand on the Norwood Town Common. This is a FREE outdoor concert, open to all - just bring a blanket and/or lawn chair. The concert is weather permitting only.
The show runs 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Use “517 Washington Street, Norwood, MA” to navigate to the venue. Plenty of free, on-street parking.
This summer concert series holds a special place on the Compaq Big Band’s long resume as the Town of Norwood MA has always programmed several big bands (not just one or two) annually, making for seriously big-band-savvy audiences. In 2024 we’re eager to be back on the calendar as one of FIVE ensembles of similar instrumentation to ‘bring it’ with our special brand of jazz and swing defined by 14 very tight horns, a cookin’ 4-piece rhythm section, a killer vocalist, a ‘book’ of powerful arrangements unique to New England bands of this genre, and a state-of-the-art sound system plus our full-time sound engineer. All brought together with an absolute passion for technical production detail.
Fronting the band on July 7th will be Ed Scheer, founder and leader of Boston’s ‘The Love Dogs’. Ed will be channelin’ Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darri, Michael Buble, and other great crooners . We will also be hittin’ the audience with some of our best instrumental arrangements, too. Think Bill Holman, Sammy Nestico, Chris Walden, and more, plus a few surprises – with some great patriotic charts sprinkled in, as well.
