The LaunchPad Gallery at Boston Sculptors welcomes the multi-media artist known as 00ON1! and their interactive installation 21st Century Consumerism: Flat World. Featuring organic and manufactured objects, a series of materials preserved in wooden tiles, as well as an old-school pink television, the installation reflects upon the all-encompassing nature of modern human civilizations. The artist invites the viewer to contemplate consumerism in the 21st century—the continual churning of physical resources necessary for production on a massive global scale, the capitalization of nature itself, and the question of how to regulate Life on Earth. Each tile is a physical reminder of our constant exposure to material abundance, including but not limited to, processed foods and drinks, non-biodegradable plastics, machinery, as well as living organisms. Some tiles also function as Memento Mori (reminders of inevitable Death). Flat World also exists as a recreational space with wooden boards and bouncy balls for visitors to use, as well as an outdated TV to play music on (via AUX cord). Live with Purpose. Share experiences. Beware… 21st Century Consumerism!
A native of Greater Boston area suburbs and city neighborhoods, 00ON1! is fascinated by individual journeys, interactions, and sensory-based abstractions within everyday human experience. Their works embrace diversity in material usage, technologies and mark-making in numerous dimensions: flat space (2D), bodily space (3D) and virtual spaces. Their hybrid installation/performance/video works have been installed in a variety of locations, most recently 4 iterations of the Raging Youth Project were featured at UMASS Lowell and Fitchburg Stste University. A prolific documentarian of personal journeys, they also give voice to the voiceless. Their collaborative videos Covid-American: A Mass Experience are a “compilation of conversations, snippets of movement and more” undertaken by 00ON1! with Massachusetts residents during the 2020 pandemic and may be viewed in consecutive segments on Youtube.
