The Cambridge Youth Dance Program and director Deborah Mason present the Spring 2016 CYDP Concert – The American Dream: Expressions of Hope and Struggle in the Pursuit of Happiness. Never one to shy away from difficult subject matter, Deborah Mason challenges her young, versatile dancers to explore their artistic depth as citizens, as human beings, and as movers. The concert explores tribulations in American culture including racial divide, opportunities in the workforce, women’s rights, and more, in a diverse tapestry from traditional to contemporary dance styles.

The production will run May 6th & 7th at 8:00pm at Boston University Dance Theater, 915 Commonwealth Ave, Boston MA. Tickets are $25-$30. Please visit www.cydp.org to purchase tickets and for more information.

In “The American Dream: Expressions of Hope and Struggle in the Pursuit of Happiness,” acclaimed CYDP faculty will present a variety of politically and socially inspired works. Adrienne Hawkins presents “Weaving Our Ancestors’ Voices,” an original jazz piece looking at the diversity of our predecessors; Jenny Oliver’s modern dance piece examines industry and the role of the American worker. Jeryl Palana explores present-day struggles and their impact on the potential for love in a contemporary dance piece; Ian Berg presents glimpses of Americana through tap dance. Leslie Woodies restages choreography from West Side Story, featuring Boston dancers Corey Baker, Ndubuisi Ofoegbu, and Derrick Louizia. CYDP is also pleased to feature guest performances from professional Boston companies, including Modern Connections, directed by Jenny Oliver; Subject: Matter, directed by Ian Berg; and Boston Tap Company, directed by Sean Fielder.

The Cambridge Youth Dance Program is an intensive pre-professional training program and performance company, founded and directed by Deborah Mason. Through CYDP, students have the opportunity to train with all-star faculty throughout the school year, in addition to working with master guest teachers through the CYDP Summer Intensive and the Beantown Tap Fest. The talent and continued dedication of these young dancers is a testament to the culture Deborah Mason cultivates at her studio and is proof that, by leading with heart and passion, there will continue to be a place for the arts in America’s future.
