Piper Kerman, author of Orange is the New Black, will receive the Humanist Heroine of the Year Award from the Humanist Community at Harvard. The award was created to honor a woman who has demonstrated a real-world application of our values and motto: “Connect. Act. Evolve.”
Orange is the New Black, which has also been produced as a hit Netflix series, has created a public awareness about the desperate need for change within the prison system in America. In it, Piper has demonstrated a commitment to education and reformation that we admire.
Her story also celebrates our motto in a tremendously touching and human way: through her journey and experiences, she has encouraged readers and viewers to connect to one another, to act together toward change, and to evolve to become better persons, and a better society.
As part of the ceremony, Piper will give a talk on these issues.
Similar honors have been awarded to comedian Eddie Izzard (2013) author Mary Roach (2012) Seth MacFarlane (2011) Discovery Chanel’s MythBusters Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman (2010) director Joss Whedon (2009) Bad Religion’s Greg Graffin (2008) and Sir Salman Rushdie (2007).
