KOEK is the Dutch word for cake and is pronounced as “cook”. The duo features soprano Aliana de la Guardia and saxophonist Kent O’Doherty, and emerged from their mutual desire to furthertheir personal artistic disciplines and to create an enveloping concert experience together. They were inspired to start the duo from the influence of the beautiful and audacious music and theatre that has been present in their lives as members of Guerilla Opera, and from their mutual love of other creative art forms. Their programs will experiment with, deepen and extend the concert experience by engaging all the senses; visual, aural, and even smell and taste at times.
“It’s not that we don’t want anyone to look at us. We want to corral their focus to listening – true listening – not to sit back and wait for the music to entertain. We hope to have them actively searching for new sounds in the music; as well as our breath, the clicking of the keys on the saxophone, the turning of the page, the rustle of someone’s clothes or program, our movements and murmuring as we prepare, anticipating what comes next.” – Kent O’Doherty
