In this workshop you will create an authentic Ohara School of Ikebana Japanese Floral Arrangement. You will create a Hana-Isho, or “Beginner” Ikebana. This Hana-Isho highlights the natural beauty of the primary materials in either a vertical arrangement, while secondary materials will be used to provide additional balance and asymmetry. A focus on negative space to provide shape to your arrangement will be explained. All materials needed to create your masterpiece will be provided to you during class. When you are done, you will bring home your Ikebana including a container and Kenzan (pin-frog) provided. Please bring a large reusable shopping bag to bring your arrangement home, as it will be easier to carry and transport the arrangement.
About Ikebana: “More than simply putting flowers in a container, ikebana is a disciplined art form in which nature and humanity are brought together. Contrary to the idea of floral arrangement as a collection of particolored or multicolored arrangement of blooms, ikebana often emphasizes other areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and draws emphasis toward shape, line, and form. Though ikebana is a creative expression, it has certain rules governing its form. The artist’s intention behind each arrangement is shown through a piece’s color combinations, natural shapes, graceful lines, and the usually implied meaning of the arrangement.”
