Choreographer Caitlin Corbett continues her exploration of movement-driven dance that celebrates human quirkiness and challenges our notion of beauty. Working collaboratively with her gorgeous company of dancers, Corbett has created a new work, smashnightinfinity, a collection of vignettes that speak to the random nature of human interaction in the modern world. The vignettes are not connected, nor are they parts of a narrative, but rather reveal Corbett’s resistance to linear story telling and overt meaning. Movement is shaped — some plain and mundane, some sweeping and glorious — to distill an idea to an essential emotional resonance. The beautiful Somerville Armory performance hall with its wood-beamed ceilings, brick walls and open, non-theatrical setting further reflects the fundamental nature of these ‘half-thoughts’.
Additionally, Corbett’s longstanding interest in working with community members with little movement experience continues with a reworking of Flutter (2006) a piece for 25 “nondancers” to the music of Marvin Gaye. Also, n.o.p.e. (2010) and an excerpt from Quiet Line (2009) will be included in the program.
