The Emancipator presents “Breastfeeding While Black” to help identify barriers to equitable maternal healthcare

Solutions Circle event brings together new and expecting Black and Brown mothers and healthcare providers in conversation with a special session focused on the Haitian community

As part of its ongoing Solutions Circle series, The Emancipator will host their second annual “Breastfeeding While Black” event on Saturday, May 18th at Brooke High School (200 American Legion Hwy, Boston) to surface the unique challenges Black and Brown mothers face and to amplify community-driven solutions to help address them. The free event will include two Solutions Circles: the first from 10-11:30am for the Haitian Creole-speaking community (translation provided) and a second one from 12:30-2:00 for English speakers for the broader community. Complimentary breakfast and lunch will be provided. The first 20 attendees of each session will receive a special gift bag.

Solutions Circles empower participants to share experiences, trade encouragement, learn new information and brainstorm solutions on how the healthcare community can provide the support they need to thrive in their breastfeeding journey. Members of Boston’s healthcare community will also be in attendance, including clinicians and researchers from Boston Medical Center’s Breastfeeding Equity Center, who will use insights from these conversations to create new programming and support for Black and Brown mothers in Boston.

The Emancipator’s “Breastfeeding While Black” Solutions Circle is a response to the staggering racial inequities that persist in maternal healthcare. Studies show that breastfed infants are 26% less likely to die between the second week of life and their first birthday, compared with non-breastfed infants. This is critical, when you consider that the Black infant mortality rate is double that of White infants. Like other maternal health inequities, antiracist medicine and policies can improve breastfeeding outcomes, which is what The Emancipator and Boston Medical Center’s Breastfeeding Equity Center are working together to achieve.

About The Emancipator

The Emancipator is an award-winning digital magazine that reimagines the nation’s first abolitionist newspapers for a new day. Our mission, like those who came before us, is to turn public opinion against racist policies and ideas. Through multimedia content, commentary and events nationwide, we explain and explore solutions to racial inequality in all aspects of life. Our stories expose the history, harms and pervasiveness of racism in America and explore solutions for its abolition. From health disparities and the wealth gap to climate inequality and police violence, we are unpacking and confronting the biggest racial justice issues of our time. The Emancipator is a digital magazine housed within Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research.
